Nigeria: Many feared dead as boat capsizes in Kano

Most of about 50 passengers aboard a boat are feared dead after the boat capsized on Tuesday evening on the Bagwai river in Bagwai Local Government Area of Kano State.
Boat accidents are common in Nigeria especially in the northern part due to overloading and faulty operation.
“The boat was ferrying about 50 people with some loads. It capsized because of overloading. Most of the passengers were Islamiyyah students,” the office of Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje said in a statement.
“We have recovered 29 bodies and rescued seven passengers. The search for the remaining 13 bodies is ongoing,” Ganduje told the AFP news agency on Wednesday.
More casualties are expected, as rescuers search for more victims, the statement added.
