Why World Migratory Bird Day is celebrated

World Migratory Bird Day aims to draw attention to the threats faced by migratory birds, their ecological importance, and the need for international cooperation to conserve them.
It also a day set aside to ensure a healthy bird population, safeguard breeding, non-breeding, and stop-over habitats of migratory birds.
According to United Nations, the significance of the day lies in their ecological importance.
“We need them to ensure ecological balance and maintain biodiversity. It is imperative to restore ecological connectivity and integrity to boost the natural movements of migratory birds.
“These are important to ensure migratory birds’ survival and well-being.”
World migratory bird day is an annual awareness-raising campaign highlighting the need for the conservation of migratory birds and their habitats.
The Day is celebrated bi-annually on the second Saturday in May and in October since it set up by the United Nations.
According to this year theme ‘ light pollution’ raise awareness on the issue birds and other animals are facing which is not only a problem endangering migratory birds but has effects on a huge variety of species including insects being an essential source of pray for a huge variety of bird species in particular under the passerines too.
