What to know about Kalanchoe Pinnata (miracle leaf)

By Obiabin Onukwugha

Kalanchoe pinnata, often called the miracle leaf,is a succulent plant known for its medicinal properties and remarkable ability to reproduce.

It is known as Ewe Abamodaor Odaa Opuein Yoruba, Oda Opuein Igbo and Asinakaabhain my community, Odual.

Kalanchoe pinnata contains compounds such as bryophillin A, bersaldegenin-3-acetate, and bryophillin C, the latter of which also has insecticidal properties.

This plant is native to Madagascar but has spread to many tropical and subtropical regions, including Africa, Asia, Australia, New Zealand, where it thrives in various climates and environments. One unique thing about Kalanchoe pinnata is that it can be grown either by the leaf or stem.

Kalanchoe pinnata has a rich history in traditional medicine. In my community, it is used to treat the navel of a newborn and actually works faster than methylated spirit and other Orthodox medical applications. It is used by placing it in low heat to make the leaf soft and then place it on the navel twice daily. It also calms newborn stomach upset.

Kalanchoe pinnata is also used to treat hypertension and relieve headaches. It is also used against inflammations, cancer, and fevers. The juice of the leaves is also used for kidney stones, a practice supported by some scientific evidence but requiring further research.

It is also used to eliminate High BP, by chewing it with garlic but you must check your BP while taking it to avoid having low BP in the process. Furthermore, Kalanchoe pinnata, is used for the treatment of arthritis and ulcer.

However, caution is advised due to its potential toxicity. Cases of cardiac poisoning have been recorded in livestock that grazed on the plant, underscoring the need for careful management when used for intake medicinal purposes.
