We’ve created 383,431 jobs, constructed 9,290.34km roads – Minister

Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Fashola, has said his ministry has successfully completed the construction of 6,068 housing units across 35 states and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), along with the development of 9,290 kilometres of roads nationwide.

Fashola said this recently when he presented an overview of the achievements of the President Muhammadu Buhari administration during his eight-year tenure.
He emphasized that the primary focus of the administration was to enhance the living conditions of Nigerians and significantly reduce multidimensional poverty.

Upon assuming office, Fashola said he aimed to revitalize neglected infrastructure projects inherited from previous administrations in order to improve the well-being of citizens.

“The budget allocation for the entire country was initially N18 billion, but under President Buhari’s leadership, it increased to N224 billion in the first year. As a result, there are currently 13,000 roads under construction.

“Additionally, the administration has generated employment opportunities with 383,431 jobs created so far. Moreover, significant progress has been made in road development, including the construction of 9,290.34 kilometres of roads, 2,270,319 linear meters of lane marking, and the installation of 254,690 road signs.

“Regarding housing, the ministry has identified 46 sites in 35 states, where 6,068 housing units have been constructed, and an additional 2,870 housing units have been completed in the FCT. Over the years, the ministry has issued 1,262 building contracts and signed 6,685 Certificates of Occupancy (C of O) from 2015 to March 2023. These efforts have resulted in a revenue generation of N13.09 billion for the ministry during the specified period.”

Fashola highlighted two significant infrastructure projects executed by the Buhari administration. The first is the long-awaited second Niger Bridge, which had been untouched for approximately three decades by previous administrations. The second major project is the prioritized development of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway. Both projects demonstrate the government’s commitment to improving transportation infrastructure across the country.
