Waste Bin: LAWMA Seals Non-Compliant Residences

The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has made an announcement
regarding the enforcement of waste bins in households.

Starting from July 7, 2023, LAWMA will seal homes without waste disposal containers on both Lagos Island and Mainland. This decision comes after issuing abatement notices to the affected areas two months ago.

In a statement, Kunle Adebiyi, the Executive Director of Finance at LAWMA, revealed that sufficient notice had been given to tenants and residents to acquire standard waste bins for their homes. The notice of intention to seal serves as a final warning to residents who have failed to procure the bins and maintain proper waste management practices. The main objective of this enforcement plan is to promote
responsible environmental behavior and minimize pollution in the city.

Adebiyi stressed the importance of cultivating proper environmental habits and supporting LAWMA’s efforts to establish a cleaner and more livable environment. By taking action against violations and ensuring compliance, a sustainable environment can be created, ultimately
contributing to the realization of an ideal city.

LAWMA’s Enforcement Team will focus on areas in Lagos Mainland and Island where violations have been observed. Thorough inspections will be conducted to identify individuals, households, or businesses that
consistently neglect waste management guidelines. Those found in violation will receive an intention to seal notice, specifying the necessary actions to rectify the situation and avoid further penalties.

This enforcement will be conducted in phases, with the current phase being the first, and subsequent areas in the state will
be visited to ensure complete compliance.

The director of LAWMA also urged residents in the state to take responsibility for maintaining a clean and healthy environment for everyone.

He emphasized that by adhering to waste management regulations and procuring standard covered bins as directed by the
government, residents can contribute to the overall cleanliness and sustainability of the environment. This practice will help prevent
indiscriminate waste disposal, as well as mitigate hazards like flooding and disease outbreaks.

LAWMA has been actively working towards enhancing waste management in Lagos state through various initiatives such as waste sorting campaigns, recycling programs, and public awareness campaigns. The aim is to foster a culture of responsible waste disposal and mitigate the
adverse impact of waste on the environment.

The director called on residents to support the government’s efforts by avoiding
indiscriminate waste disposal and utilizing the waste management services provided by the Private Sector Partnership (PSP) operators.
