Pumpkin leaf also known as Akwukwo Ugu in Igbo language is a tropical vine which is grown in West African countries. It is majorly grown for it’s edible seeds and leafy vegetable. It is known by many names in different localities such as fluted pumpkin, fluted gourd, Okwukwo- wiri in Ikwere, Ikong-ubong in Efik etc. It is botanically called Telfairia occidentalis and is indigenous to Southern-Nigeria  and it grows in many countries in West Africa. It is majorly cultivated in South Eastern Nigeria and used in soups, stews and herbal medications. The pumpkin plant is perennial and drought resistant.

Pumpkin leaf has a lot of health benefits, it is known or popular for it’s therapeutic effects and are regarded as blood tonic because they are used for treatment especially those that have shortage of blood. 

Pumpkin leaf has loads of nutrients, they are rich sources of vitamin and minerals such as potassium, calcium, folic acid , iron, vitamin E, B6, A, C, Proteins, Riboflavin, copper, fibre, magnesium, phosphorus and lots more.

The anti-inflammatory, anti oxidant properties in pumpkin is important as they fight deadly diseases. The leaf can prevent the growth of cancer cells due to the presence of phytosterol that have chemo- suppressive properties. The anti-oxidants also boost the testicular function and increases the sperm count. 

Pumpkin leaf aid in the regulation of blood sugar level. It’s hypoglycemic effects helps in the control of diabetes. The leaf contains ethyl acetate and polysaccharides which helps to reduce and regulate the glucose level in a patient with diabetes. 

With the numerous vitamins and minerals contained in pumpkin leaf, they facilitate and keep the body in good working conditions. They cleanse and maintain the vital organs of the body and provide resistance to dangerous and harmful substances.

Pumpkin leaf has low sodium and cholesterol and so they are extremely great for all.
