U.S., others discovered to have World Smallest Airports
By Nneka Nwogwugwu
A publication by Times of India, has revealed some countries that have the smallest airports in the world.
There are:
1. Morgantown Municipal Airport
Morgantown Municipal Airport in U.S. is primarily used for general aviation purposes, and is served by one commercial airline, i.e., United Airlines that connects the town with Clarksburg, and Washington Dulles International Airport in Washington DC. Note.
The runway of this airport is just 0.5 miles long, and one can easily watch planes taking off and landing from the restaurant.
Apart from featuring a cafe, and a car park, the airport also features free Wifi.
2. Juancho Yrausquin Airport
The Carribean island of Saba is home to the world’s shortest commercial runway, i.e., the Juancho Yrausquin Airport.
At just a quarter of a mile, the runway is only slightly longer than the average aircraft carrier, and that’s the reason why jet aircrafts are banned from using the runway.
Windair is the only airline serving the airport, and operates two daily flights to nearby Saint Martin and Saint Eustatius, which can be reached via plane in less than 15 min.
3. Barra’s Traigh Mhor beach in Scotland is the world’s only beach runway that handles scheduled airline services.
The airport remains open for a few hours a day, from Monday to Friday.
Since the area sees unstable weather conditions, the arrival and departure times of the flights also vary.
Also, despite being located in a remote location, Barra Airport provides all the basic facilities, such as car rental services, car parking, and other services.
4. Tenzing-Hillary Airport, Nepal
Lukla, is a quaint village in Nepal, which is more than often chosen by visitors as the starting point for their trekking adventure to Mt. Everest.
This airport has also been named after the first two exemplary people, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, who successfully climbed Mt. Everest for the first time.
The airport makes it to this list because of its location and short runway, which makes taking-off and landing at this airport a real challenge for pilots.
