The Cucumber that refused to age: What our growing fear of food says about the future of agriculture

A few days ago, I came across a video that has probably found its way onto the phones of thousands of Nigerians. A man held up one cucumbers he claimed to have bought several days earlier.  He said, he bought two , ate one  and later fell ill. The other, according to him, had remained almost exactly the same after days on his kitchen shelf. It neither shrivelled nor showed the signs of ageing that many of us have come to expect from fresh produce.

Whether his claims are true is almost beside the point.

There is no scientific evidence that the cucumber was genetically modified or that it caused his illness. Fruits and vegetables can remain fresh for varying periods depending on their variety, storage conditions, harvesting stage and post-harvest handling. Illness after eating food may equally result from contamination, poor hygiene, food-borne pathogens or unrelated medical conditions.

Yet, the video struck a chord because it echoed a fear that has been quietly growing among consumers: Can we still trust the food on our plates?

For generations, parents encouraged their children to eat more fruits and vegetables. They represented life, vitality and good health. Today, however, many people inspect fruits with suspicion. Some wonder whether they contain excessive pesticides. Others worry about preservatives. Increasingly, every unusually large tomato, glossy apple or long-lasting cucumber is casually labelled a “GMO” without any evidence.

It is a reflection of something much deeper than misunderstanding. It is a reflection of declining public confidence in our food system.

Unfortunately, the term Genetically Modified Organism has become one of the most misunderstood phrases in modern agriculture.

To many people, GMO has become a synonym for “unsafe.” That is far from accurate.

A GMO is simply an organism whose genetic material has been deliberately modified using biotechnology to introduce specific traits, such as resistance to pests, improved nutritional value or tolerance to drought. Around the world, scientists continue to debate their long-term ecological, economic and social implications, but decades of research have not established that approved GMO foods are inherently harmful to human health simply because they are genetically modified.

Ironically, many fruits that consumers accuse of being GMOs are not genetically modified at all. Their appearance may simply be the result of selective breeding, improved farming practices or better storage technologies.

This misunderstanding creates an unfortunate situation where legitimate concerns about food safety become mixed with misinformation.

The real issues deserve attention.

Across many developing countries, concerns over excessive pesticide application, improper use of chemicals, poor market hygiene, weak storage facilities and inadequate food inspection are not imaginary. They are genuine public health issues that require stronger regulation and better enforcement.

Consumers therefore have every right to ask questions.

Was this produce tested before reaching the market?

How much pesticide residue remains on its surface?

Was it harvested responsibly?

Were approved preservation methods used?

Unfortunately, because answers are rarely communicated openly, speculation fills the vacuum.

Social media then becomes the courtroom, the laboratory and the judge all at once.

A single viral video reaches millions before a food scientist has even seen it.

Fear spreads faster than facts.

The danger is that this growing distrust could eventually discourage people from eating enough fruits and vegetables. That would be a tragic outcome.

The World Health Organization has repeatedly highlighted the importance of fruit and vegetable consumption in preventing cardiovascular disease, obesity, diabetes and certain cancers. If misinformation drives people away from healthy diets, we may create a larger public health crisis than the one we fear.

Yet something fascinating is also happening.

As confidence in commercial food systems declines, more families are beginning to rediscover something many of our grandparents considered normal, growing food at home.

Across cities, balconies now hold pots of tomatoes. Empty paint buckets have become vegetable gardens. Rooftops are being transformed into miniature farms. Schools are introducing agricultural clubs. Communities are reviving urban gardening initiatives.

This movement is about much more than saving money.

It is about reclaiming trust.

There is something reassuring about harvesting vegetables you planted yourself. You know the soil they grew in. You know whether pesticides were used. You know when they were harvested. You understand their journey from seed to plate.

While home gardening alone cannot feed rapidly growing urban populations, it can strengthen household food security, improve nutrition and reconnect people with nature. It also reduces transportation emissions, supports biodiversity in urban spaces and reminds us that sustainability often begins at home.

However, we cannot expect millions of citizens to become farmers simply because they no longer trust the marketplace.

The greater responsibility rests with government.

Food safety is not merely an agricultural issue. It is a national security issue, a healthcare issue and an environmental issue.

Regulatory agencies must move beyond periodic inspections and embrace continuous monitoring of pesticide residues, microbial contamination and chemical hazards in foods sold across our markets.

Inspection reports should not remain hidden inside filing cabinets.

Consumers deserve transparency.

Modern technology also presents opportunities that many countries are already embracing. Digital traceability systems can allow consumers to scan QR codes and discover where produce originated, when it was harvested and whether it passed safety inspections. Such systems strengthen accountability while rewarding farmers who comply with best agricultural practices.

Equally important is farmer education.

Many smallholder farmers genuinely want to produce safe food but often lack access to training on responsible pesticide application, integrated pest management, soil conservation and sustainable farming methods. Investing in farmers is ultimately an investment in public health.

The media also has an important responsibility.

Environmental journalism should neither sensationalise nor dismiss public concerns. Instead, it should investigate, educate and bridge the gap between scientific research and public understanding. Every alarming social media claim deserves verification, not amplification.

Scientists, too, must become more visible. Research locked inside academic journals does little to reassure worried consumers. Scientific knowledge should be translated into language ordinary citizens can understand.

Perhaps the cucumber in that viral video was perfectly safe. Perhaps it was not. Without proper laboratory analysis, no responsible conclusion can be drawn.

But maybe the cucumber itself is not the biggest story.

Perhaps the real story is that millions of people were willing to believe it.

That willingness reflects years of declining confidence in regulatory systems, increasing exposure to misinformation and growing uncertainty about what we eat.

Rebuilding that confidence will require far more than fact-checking a viral video.

It will require governments that enforce food safety laws without compromise, farmers who adopt sustainable agricultural practices, scientists who communicate openly, journalists who report responsibly and consumers who seek evidence before embracing fear.

Nature has always provided humanity with some of its greatest medicines through fruits, vegetables and healthy ecosystems. We must not allow misinformation to sever that relationship.

Instead, this moment should inspire a renewed commitment to food transparency, environmental stewardship and stronger agricultural governance.

After all, the healthiest harvest is not merely one that fills our markets.

It is one that fills our hearts with confidence that the food nourishing our families is safe, sustainable and worthy of our trust.
