Strengthening Climate Cooperation: Colombia, EU’s Pivotal Dialogue

By Faridat Salifu

Colombia and the European Union convened recently at the San Carlos Palace in Bogotá for their second High-Level Dialogue on Climate and Environment.

This meeting was a follow-up to their initial discussions in 2022, aiming to enhance collaboration on climate-related challenges.

The Colombian delegation was spearheaded by Adriana Mendoza, the Director of Economic, Social and Environmental Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Key participants included Lilia Tatiana Roa Avendaño, Deputy Minister of Environmental Land Management, and María Saralux Valbuena, Director of Climate Change and Risk Management. Additionally, representatives from the Ministry of Finance joined the discussions.

The EU team was led by Diana Acconcia, the Director for International Affairs and Climate Finance at the European Commission. She was supported by other officials, including Joerg Schreiber and Lukas Visek, who brought valuable insights on climate action and carbon pricing.

During the dialogue, several critical issues were addressed:

– Achieving Climate Neutrality: Both sides discussed actionable pathways towards climate neutrality, emphasizing the need for a fair energy transition that balances economic and environmental goals.

– Investment in Climate Finance: The dialogue highlighted the necessity for enhanced climate finance cooperation, essential for supporting Colombia’s efforts in adaptation and renewable energy initiatives.

– Preparation for COP30: Participants exchanged updates regarding their Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), with a commitment to the Paris Agreement and the need for urgent action to limit global temperature increases.

– Carbon Pricing Mechanisms: The discussions also included the sharing of best practices in carbon market policies, with Colombia outlining its future plans and the EU providing expertise on effective carbon pricing strategies.

Both Colombia and the EU reiterated their dedication to a collaborative approach in advancing their green agendas. They agreed to spotlight climate and biodiversity initiatives in the forthcoming political declaration for the EU-CELAC Summit, which is set to take place in Colombia in late 2025.

The dialogue underscores the deepening partnership between Colombia and the EU, rooted in shared values of democracy, human rights, and sustainable development, as both sides work towards a resilient and sustainable future.
