FG Urges Radio Stations to Amplify Climate Change Awareness

The federal government of has urged all radio stations across the country to actively use their platforms to create awareness about climate change and its far-reaching impacts.
This call to action was made by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, in a statement he signed on Thursday, marking the celebration of World Radio Day.
Idris emphasized the crucial role of radio in educating and informing communities, stating that through engaging and informative programming, radio stations can empower people with the knowledge and tools needed to adapt to the realities of climate change and mitigate its adverse effects.
The minister highlighted that radio, as a powerful medium, can reach even the most remote areas, ensuring that no community is left behind in the collective fight against climate change.
The minister challenged radio stations to go beyond regular broadcasting by actively collaborating with relevant organizations and climate change experts.
By featuring interviews with scientists, environmentalists, and policymakers, radio stations can provide accurate and reliable information, fostering a deeper understanding of climate issues and encouraging proactive solutions.
He noted that this collaborative approach aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which places sustainability and environmental resilience at the forefront of national priorities.
In addition to broadcasting, Idris called on the environmental community and the general public to reflect on their daily habits and make simple but impactful changes.
Reducing plastic usage, conserving energy, and promoting sustainable agricultural practices were cited as actionable steps that, collectively, could make a significant difference over time.
He stressed that climate change is a global issue, transcending borders, and that Nigeria must join hands with other nations in finding and implementing sustainable solutions for a better, healthier planet.
As Nigeria joined the international community in celebrating the vital role of radio in addressing the climate crisis, the minister expressed hope that citizens would embrace their responsibility in this shared endeavor.
He appealed to Nigerians to see beyond immediate challenges and work towards safeguarding the environment for future generations.
Idris also extended his congratulations to UNESCO for spearheading this initiative, acknowledging the importance of harnessing the power of radio to drive positive change.
He emphasizing that the combined efforts of the media, government, and citizens could create a meaningful impact, protecting the planet and building a sustainable legacy for the generations yet to come.
