Shungite is a rare black, lustrous, carbon-rich mineral rock primarily found in Russia. It has various applications, such as water purification, alleged electromagnetic radiation protection and holistic healing practices. It has gained global recognition for its purported healing and protective properties.
Shungite was first discovered in the Karelia region of Russia near the village of Shunga, which is where it gets its name. The rock is estimated to be around 2 billion years old, formed from ancient organic matter under extreme heat and pressure.
Lustrous black or dark gray rock with a smooth surface. It may exhibit a metallic sheen or subtle patterns. It is composed basically of carbon, with trace minerals like silicon, aluminum, iron, and magnesium. It contains fullerenes, a unique form of carbon molecules with powerful antioxidant properties.
Due to its high carbon content, it conducts electricity. It is known for its durability and resistance to heat.
Shungite has been used to filter and purify water due to its antibacterial and detoxifying properties. Often used in alternative medicine for pain relief, stress reduction, and boosting energy levels.
It is used to shield against electromagnetic fields (EMFs) from electronic devices like phones and Wi-Fi routers. It can be crafted into pendants, bracelets, and other items believed to provide protective and healing benefits.
Shungite is used in creating materials that require electrical conductivity and resistance.
Shungite is a key export product of Russia, especially from the Karelia region. It has gained popularity worldwide for its purported health benefits, leading to a growing market for Shungite-based products.
The presence of fullerenes in Shungite has made it a subject of research in material science, chemistry, and medicine.
The Karelia region attracts visitors interested in Shungite’s history, geology, and health. It is explored for its potential in water treatment and pollution control.
Shungite is more than just a mineral; it is a unique natural substance with historical significance, distinct characteristics, and diverse applications. Whether used for water purification, wellness, or industrial purposes, its global value continues to rise, making it a sought-after resource in various fields.
