SGF Urges More Funding For Climate Actions In Nigeria

During a one-day National Workshop reviewing outcomes of the 28th Session of the UNFCCC-COP28, Senator George Akume, Secretary to the Government of the Federation of Nigeria (SGF), emphasized the critical necessity of internal financial mobilization and integrating climate considerations into national budgeting to effectively tackle climate change challenges in Nigeria.

Senator Akume stressed the urgency of the climate crisis and highlighted the imperative for bold and decisive actions to safeguard the future of both the nation and the planet.

He underscored the significance of COP28 outcomes, which provide a roadmap for enhancing global climate ambition and strengthening adaptation efforts.

The senator advocated for a comprehensive, whole-of-government approach to mainstream climate considerations across all sectors and policies.

He emphasized robust coordination and collaboration among government agencies, civil society, the private sector, and local communities to mobilize resources and implement innovative solutions.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to the Paris Agreement, Senator Akume emphasized the importance of translating climate commitments into tangible outcomes.

He outlined the government’s dedication to implementing comprehensive reforms aimed at enhancing revenue collection, promoting fiscal transparency, and prioritizing sustainability within national budgets.

Furthermore, Senator Akume stressed the need to integrate climate finance into budgetary frameworks and prioritize investments in climate-resilient infrastructure and sustainable agriculture practices.

He highlighted the importance of leveraging both domestic and international resources to achieve ambitious climate goals.

The senator called for greater ambition and solidarity within the international community and emphasized the government’s commitment to advancing the energy transition and low-carbon agenda through initiatives like the Nigerian Climate Change Act.

Senator Akume urged stakeholders to seize the momentum generated by COP28 to intensify efforts, reaffirm commitments to collective action, and collaboratively shape a sustainable future for present and future generations.
