Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has launched the OMI-EKO Project, a major initiative aimed at transforming the city’s water transportation system into a sustainable, connected, and future-focused network.

Speaking at the unveiling of the Lagos State Waterways Authority-led project, Sanwo-Olu said Lagos is positioning itself to lead Africa in modern water mobility.

He described the initiative as more than a project launch — calling it a declaration of intent to build a smart, environmentally conscious transportation ecosystem.

Sanwo-Olu highlighted the city’s historical reliance on waterways, noting that Lagos began as a network of islands where boats were once the primary mode of transport.

Under his administration’s THEMES+ Agenda, he said water transport has been prioritized as a key solution to easing urban congestion.

Key achievements leading up to the OMI-EKO Project include the expansion of the Omi-Bus fleet with modern ferries, the establishment of West Africa’s first Waterways Monitoring and Data Centre, and a significant increase in waterways security personnel.

He also pointed to Lagos hosting Africa’s first electric powerboat race, the E1 Series, as proof of the state’s commitment to clean innovation.

The OMI-EKO Project, he explained, is a comprehensive plan that integrates technology, sustainability, and design to enhance the safety, efficiency, and accessibility of water transport in Lagos.

The project includes the acquisition of over 75 electric-powered boats as part of a shift toward clean energy.

“This initiative is not just lifting boats — it’s lifting lives, businesses, and communities,” Sanwo-Olu said, adding that Lagos is setting the pace for Africa’s urban transformation.

Special Adviser on Blue Economy, Damilola Emmanuel, praised past Lagos governors for their foundational investments in water transport, while commending Sanwo-Olu for taking the sector to new heights with the OMI-EKO initiative.
