Sand is a granular material that is made up of finely divided rock and mineral particles. Sand has variety of compositions but is said to be defined by it’s grain size. It is a rock that is ground more finely than gravel but is not as fine as silt. It is also referred to as textural class of soil or soil type. The main composition of sand in non tropical coastal and inland continental settings is Silicon dioxide (Silica).
Sand is a non-renewable mineral resources and it is used in making concrete. Formation of sand occurs when rocks weather over a long period of time by wind and sand and are transported to form sediments that continues to wear apart until they form fine grains of sand.
Sand can be manufactured from rock by artificial procedures which are mainly for construction purposes. Sand are used in producing cement, concrete for plastering and roofing. It is used to hold buildings from flood by the use of sandbags.
Sandy soils are used in planting some crops like watermelons, peaches, peanuts etc.
Sand deposits can be found in Delta, Ondo, Katsina, Lagos, Plateau and Ogun state.
