The House of Representatives Nigeria has called for stricter enforcement of regulations guiding the location of gas stations across the country, following a recent explosion in Apapa, Lagos.
The resolution was adopted after a motion of urgent national importance moved by Rep. Samuel Adedayo during plenary on Wednesday.
Adedayo, who represents Apapa Federal Constituency, lamented the explosion which occurred in the early hours of Tuesday on Adeleye Street, describing it as devastating.
According to him, the incident happened at a site where construction activities were ongoing, leading to extensive damage to nearby buildings and significant financial losses.
He added that five persons sustained varying degrees of injuries, including a student who was reportedly on the way to school at the time of the explosion.
The lawmaker expressed concern over the recurring cases of gas explosions, particularly in densely populated, low-income residential areas, noting the persistent threat to lives and property.
He urged the House to mandate relevant regulatory authorities to strictly enforce existing guidelines on the siting of gas stations nationwide.
Adedayo also called on the National Emergency Management Agency and other relevant agencies to urgently provide relief materials to victims of the explosion.
The House subsequently adopted the motion.
