Pet Valu drives sustainability forward with Volvo VNR electric trucks

By Abbas Nazil

Pet Valu, Canada’s top pet specialty retailer, has taken a major step toward sustainable transportation by adding two Volvo VNR Electric trucks to its fleet.

This initiative is part of the company’s broader efforts to modernize its supply chain while reducing its environmental impact.

The zero-tailpipe emission trucks will help Pet Valu move closer to its vision of building Canada’s most robust and eco-friendly pet supply distribution network.

The two new battery-electric trucks will operate from Pet Valu’s state-of-the-art, 350,000-square-foot distribution center in Surrey, British Columbia.

The facility is LEED-Gold certified, underscoring the company’s commitment to sustainability. These trucks will be responsible for delivering pet food and other supplies to the Pet Valu family of stores, including Pet Valu, Bosley’s by Pet Valu, Total Pet, and Tisol.

Running five days a week, they will cover an average of 300 kilometers (186 miles) per day across British Columbia.

Each of the new Class 8 Volvo VNR Electric day cabs is equipped with a six-battery pack configuration, offering a maximum range of up to 442 kilometers (275 miles) per charge.

To support this transition, Pet Valu has installed two 120kW chargers at its Surrey distribution center, where the trucks will recharge overnight, ensuring consistent operational efficiency.

The adoption of these electric trucks aligns with Pet Valu’s sustainability strategy, which includes improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

According to Nico Weidel, Pet Valu’s chief supply chain officer, each electric truck has the potential to replace over 25,000 liters of diesel fuel per year, preventing the release of more than 62 tonnes of CO2 equivalent annually.

This shift represents a crucial move toward decarbonizing the company’s logistics operations and exploring broader fleet electrification in the future.

Volvo Trucks North America has expressed strong support for Pet Valu’s move toward electric transportation.

Matthew Blackman, managing director for Canada at Volvo Trucks North America, praised the retailer’s efforts, highlighting that the quiet and emissions-free nature of these trucks will contribute to a more sustainable and community-friendly supply chain.

The near-silent operation of the Volvo VNR Electric trucks not only enhances the driver experience but also reduces noise pollution, which is especially beneficial for urban deliveries during early morning or late evening hours.

Beyond environmental benefits, Pet Valu has leveraged federal and provincial incentives to make the transition financially viable.

The company secured funding through programs such as Clean BC – Go Electric and the federal iMHZEV (Incentives for Medium- and Heavy-Duty Zero-Emission Vehicles) initiative, which helped offset the cost of the electric trucks and charging infrastructure.

Additionally, Pet Valu may qualify for carbon credits based on the fuel savings and mileage accumulated by these trucks, making the investment even more advantageous.

Volvo Trucks North America, a leader in the heavy-duty trucking industry, continues to provide sustainable transport solutions through its range of diesel, alternative-fuel, and electric vehicles.

The company operates nearly 400 authorized dealerships across North America, ensuring reliable service and support for customers transitioning to electric fleets.

All Volvo trucks in North America are assembled at the company’s New River Valley manufacturing facility in Virginia, which holds prestigious environmental and energy management certifications.

Pet Valu’s sustainability efforts extend beyond its transportation network. With over 800 corporate and franchised locations across Canada, the company has built a strong reputation for offering high-quality pet products and knowledgeable customer service.

For more than 45 years, it has remained dedicated to meeting the needs of pet owners while also prioritizing environmental responsibility.

The company’s forward-thinking approach positions it as an industry leader in sustainability and supply chain innovation.

As the demand for greener logistics solutions grows, Pet Valu’s investment in Volvo VNR Electric trucks marks a significant milestone in the pet supply sector.

By reducing emissions, improving operational efficiency, and leveraging government incentives, Pet Valu is demonstrating how businesses can balance profitability with sustainability.

The company’s experience with these electric trucks will help shape future decisions about fleet electrification and reinforce its commitment to a cleaner, more efficient supply chain.
