Okro or Okra (Abelmoschus esculentus) is also known as the Ladies fingers. It is a flowering plant with edible green seed pods. It is cultivated mainly in tropical, subtropical and warm temperate regions of the world. The seeds of the Okra are processed to extract the oil. The oil has a high amount of unsaturated fats ( Oleic acid and linoleic acid). Okro is described and used in cuisines as vegetables but botanically a fruit.
They are very healthy with loads of nutrients. Raw Okro contains 90% water, 2% protein, 7% carbohydrates with negligible fat, fibre, vitamin C, K, thiamine, folate and magnesium.
Okro is rich in anti-oxidants like polyphenols and other essential vitamins. It also has lectin, a protein that inhibit or prevent the proliferation of cancer cells. The anti-oxidants fight free radicals that causes great harm to the human body. Polyphenols are also essential in protecting the heart and brain against inflammation and clots.
