Ondo monarch urges government action against illegal mining

By Faridat Salifu

Oba Charles Basorun, the Oloja of Imoru Community in Ondo State’s Odigbo Local Government Area, has called for federal and state governments’ intervention to address the rampant illegal mining in the area.

Speaking to journalists in Akure recently, the traditional ruler claimed that security agents are complicit, allegedly providing protection to the illegal miners, which has left residents in fear.

He revealed that he had contacted the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals Development, requesting an investigation into a mining license presented by one of the firms, which he believes to be fraudulent.

Oba Basorun stated that his research indicated the license, purportedly issued on November 15, 2024, and expiring on November 14, 2027, is not legitimate.

He urged authorities to take immediate action against the illegal operations and warned that increasing security personnel at the mining site could escalate tensions and lead to confrontations.

“We have received information about plans to send more security forces to the area, which could result in crisis,” he cautioned, appealing for calm and proper investigation into the situation.
