OAU Institute appeals to Govts to take environmental challenges seriously
The Institute of Ecology and Environmental Studies at Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife has called for increased collaboration between the governments and stakeholders to address various environmental challenges such as climate change, global warming, and air and water pollution.
Professor Adebayo Bamire, the Vice Chancellor of the university, made this appeal during the institute’s 40th-anniversary celebration held at the Oduduwa Hall of the institution.
Both Nigeria and the rest of the world continue to grapple with a range of environmental issues, including deforestation, flood disasters, and pollution of air and water.
Established in July 1982 as the first institute of its kind in West Africa, the Institute of Ecology and Environmental Studies at Obafemi Awolowo University aims to develop expertise and tackle ecological problems through research and development.
During the anniversary event, which had the theme “Institute of Ecology and Environmental Studies at 40: The Way Forward Amidst Environmental Challenges,” speakers emphasized the importance of building upon past achievements and taking further action to ensure a sustainable and habitable environment.
Professor Anthony Malomo, a zoology professor, delivered a lecture on the topic of “Ecology and Nigerian Society,” highlighting the need to enhance environmental education at all levels of the Nigerian education system.
The institute appealed to the government for sufficient funding and facilities to maintain its international standards.
Muhammad Yahaya, a United Nations representative, noted that the years 2021-2030 have been designated as the decade for ecosystem restoration to combat climate change and enhance food security.
The week-long anniversary celebration also includes a training workshop, the inauguration of alumni, and an international conference centred around the theme “Pollutant and Ecosystem Restoration: Implications for One Health.”
