Palm Kernel oil is extracted from palm kernel seed and had been in existence since time immemorial. It is widely known in West African countries and most prominent in Nigeria. It is an inexpensive oil with loads of benefits which are had been neglected by individuals.
Palm Kernel oil is quite different and more saturated than the well known palm oil. It is gotten from the edible seed or nut of a palm fruit which is a produce of palm tree (Elais guineenais). It has a very long shelf life and can be kept for long without alteration.
It is known as “ude aki” “adi dudu”, “mmayanya” and “manlade” among the Igbo, Yoruba, Efik and Hausa respectively. It is mostly seen in the rural parts of the country. It is a highly saturated vegetable oil with no cholesterol and trans fat. It has loads of antioxidants, unsaturated fats, Vitamins A and K.
Palm kernel oil is highly medicinal but slowly disappearing from our homes. It had been an exceptional home remedy for numerous life-threatening ailments for years now.
Palm kernel oil has been used to treat epilepsy, cold especially in children and young adults. It is applied in the anal region after constipation, which make the anal muscles to relax which improves easy bowel movement. It is used to treat children battling with convulsion, high fever, pains in the abdomen as well as rashes on the skin.
Palm kernel oil is essential for the hair. It conditions, thickens, reduces breakage and improves the quality and texture of the hair. It also improves the skin. It softens and makes the skin look glossy. It relieves inflammation and helps in healing of wounds and injuries. Palm kernel oil had been used with shear butter for many skin care remedies.
