No Going Back on Demolition of Houses, Says Lagos govt

The Lagos State government has stated that there is no going back on its demolition of the structures and houses built on drainage channels at Lekki 2 Ikota area.
The government also promised to ensure justice and fairness for residents in the demolition exercise. It said the demolition is geared towards a healthy environment.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made this known after assessing the drainage channels at Lekki 2 Ikota area. He regretted that the state government had to take the very difficult decision to pull down structures and buildings to reclaim the drainages for free flow of water in the area.
He insisted that the state was committed to reclaiming the blocked drainages in order to restore the master plan of the area.
Wahab informed that notices were served to the owners of the structures in Ikota since 2020, pointing out that it was necessary to visit the Ikota site once again and personally meet the owners of the structures yet to go down to inform them on the need to vacate the building before the demolition exercise.
“We have gone round to check and we concluded that all houses on the canal path and on those on the canal itself must be removed and the path recreated to discharge into Ikota river,” he said.
