NiMet Forecasts Thunderstorms, Dust Haze Across Nigeria

By Faridat Salifu

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a weather advisory, warning Nigerians to brace for a mix of thunderstorms and dust haze between Sunday, April 27 and Tuesday, April 29, 2025.

According to its latest forecast, released in Abuja on Saturday, moderate dust haze will blanket parts of the Northern states including Katsina, Sokoto, Zamfara, Borno, Kano, Yobe, and Jigawa.

NiMet emphasized the need for caution, particularly for residents vulnerable to respiratory issues and road users who may experience reduced visibility.

The forecast also highlights a heightened risk of thunderstorms across several regions.

In the North-East, Adamawa and Taraba States are expected to witness isolated thunderstorms throughout the three-day period, while the North-Central region — covering the Federal Capital Territory, Plateau, Kogi, Nasarawa, and Benue — should prepare for afternoon and evening storms.

In the South, early morning thunderstorms are likely in coastal states such as Lagos, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom, with heavier rainfall predicted later in the day across broader areas.

Looking ahead to Monday, the northern parts of the country are forecasted to experience clearer skies in the morning, though thunderstorms may develop by evening in areas like Kaduna, Bauchi, and Gombe. Similar conditions are expected in parts of the North-Central and Southern regions.

By Tuesday, NiMet projects a return to sunny weather in the North, with scattered thunderstorms over Adamawa, Taraba, and Kaduna later in the day. Central states including the FCT, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and Niger could also see storm activity by afternoon and evening hours.

NiMet has urged the public to take safety measures seriously, warning that strong winds could accompany thunderstorms, potentially causing damage. Air travelers were also advised to consult updated weather information for safer flight planning.

The agency stressed the importance of staying informed, encouraging Nigerians to follow updates through its official website at www.nimet.gov.ng.
