Nigerians Embrace Safer Vehicle Conversion with CNG

As the search for affordable and eco-friendly automotive fuels gains momentum in Nigeria, Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) has emerged as a promising solution.
However, safety concerns and the complexities of vehicle conversion have become key considerations in this transition.
With the rising cost of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), the demand for alternative options is on the rise.
Experts warn against entrusting the conversion process to unqualified individuals, stressing the potential risks of engaging with unscrupulous operators.
To shed light on the conversion costs, reputable CNG conversion technicians have revealed the expenses for different vehicles. Savings from transitioning to CNG can be substantial, making it a cost-effective and eco-friendly choice.
For instance, converting petrol vehicles with a 1.6-liter engine ranges between N300,000 to N400,000, while tricycles with 4 Stroke Engines cost N100,000 to N200,000. At the higher end, lorries and vans demand as much as N1.8 million for conversion, and 4 Stroke Petrol generator engines require approximately N90,000.
The economic benefits of transitioning to alternative fuels are substantial. A converted petrol vehicle can save up to 40 percent, consuming just N40 per kilometer.
Tricycles, on the other hand, enjoy savings between 50-75 percent, with a cost of N10 per kilometer against petrol. For converted trucks, the consumption rate is N360 per kilometer, making them a viable cost-effective choice.
In response to the removal of petrol subsidies and increasing pump prices, the Nigerian government views autogas as a promising alternative that offers cost savings and reduced environmental impact.
However, there is a knowledge gap among Nigerians regarding the suitable gas option for their vehicles, leading to unfortunate incidents like car explosions.
Experts emphasize the importance of understanding the differences between CNG, LPG, and LNG, and selecting the safest option for vehicle conversion.
CNG vs LPG Fuel:
CNG and LPG fuels have distinct characteristics and applications. While CNG, made of methane, is commonly used as a gasoline substitute in automobiles, LPG, comprising propane and butane, finds extensive use in various industries.
Both can be used for cooking, heating, and as automobile fuel. CNG emits fewer greenhouse gases than LPG, making it a cleaner option.
One significant safety advantage of CNG is its quick dissipation in case of a spill, while LPG tends to settle on the ground and is more challenging to disperse.
CNG vs LNG Fuel:
Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) share similarities in their natural gas composition, but their delivery and storage methods differ. While LNG is converted into liquid form through freezing, CNG is highly pressurized for compactness.
Despite the advantages of LNG, CNG stands out as the safer choice for vehicle fuel due to its easier refueling process, quick dissipation in case of a leak, and lower production costs.
To enhance safety during vehicle conversion, experts recommend opting for CNG cylinders and canisters due to their thicker build.
As Nigeria continues to explore alternative automotive fuels, public education on the differences between CNG, LPG, and LNG is crucial.
