Alarm: Earth Tremor occures in South-West Nigeria

By Nneka Nwogwugwu

A low magnitude Earth Tremor at the weekend swept through the South Western part of Nigeria without the public sensing its occurrence.

This was disclosed by Professor Abraham Adekunle Adepelumi of the department of Geology, Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife.

In a terse statement issued at the weekend, Professor Adepelumu states: “Earth Tremor of Low Magnitude occurred in South-western Nigeria around mid-day on 5th June, 2021″.

He reiterated that the Seismometers and Infrasonic detector in the Earthquake and Space Weather Laboratory of the University “picked the event very clearly”.

Professor Adepelumi however explained that experts “are trying to find the cause and source of the earth-tremor before releasing a preliminary report to the public.”
