The practice of open scavenging has been officially prohibited across all twenty-five local government areas within Niger State.
The announcement was made by Dr. Abubakar Mohammed, the General Manager of the Niger State Environmental Protection Agency (NISEPA), Recently during a meeting with the members of the State Chapter of the Scrap Metal Dealers Association of Nigeria in Minna.

Dr. Abubakar Mohammed underscored that individuals caught engaging in open scavenging will face legal prosecution as a deterrent to others. This move aligns with the state’s commitment to creating a conducive environment in support of Governor Mohammed Umar Bago’s Urban Renewal policy, where a clean environment is of paramount importance. He called upon the people of Niger State to offer their full support to ensure the success of this endeavor.
Additionally, Dr. Abubakar Mohammed revealed plans by NISEPA to introduce the use of bin bags in households for waste disposal. These bags will be collected and properly disposed of by agency personnel at an affordable cost, contributing to maintaining the cleanliness of Niger State.
Expressing his satisfaction, Dr. Abubakar Mohammed highlighted the unanimous support from the Niger State Chapter of the Scrap Metal Dealers Association of Nigeria for this initiative, ensuring its smooth implementation.
In a statement, Alh Abba Gambo, Chairman of the Scrap Metal Dealers Association of Nigeria Niger State Chapter, conveyed his members’ commitment to complying with the directive. He emphasized that prosecution would not be necessary, as the association’s members were responsive and willing to support initiatives that enhance their capacity and, by extension, contribute to the development of Niger State and Nigeria as a whole.
