NGO urges badagry residents to adopt responsible waste practices

By Faridat Salifu

Lagos Beach Cleaners, a non-governmental organisation, on Monday carried out a cleanup exercise at Gberefu Beach in Badagry, Lagos State, to mark the 2025 World Oceans Day.

The group called on residents to adopt responsible waste disposal habits as part of efforts to reduce marine pollution and protect coastal environments.

The founder, Mr. Israel Bonu, said the initiative aimed to raise awareness about the effects of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems and nearby communities.

Speaking during the event, Bonu said the annual observance provided an opportunity to assess the state of the oceans and take local action to address environmental challenges.

He said Lagos Beach Cleaners was established to carry out regular cleanup activities and engage communities in environmental education campaigns.

The foundation’s Director of Media, Dr. Sewhude Akande, said the exercise also aimed to encourage long-term behavioural change among residents and volunteers.

The event ended with a brief sensitisation session highlighting the environmental risks associated with indiscriminate waste disposal and the use of single-use plastics.

World Oceans Day is observed globally to promote the conservation of ocean resources and draw attention to the threats facing marine ecosystems.
