NEMA warns Kebbi residents of flooding, severe weather

National Emergency Management Agency has alerted residents of Kebbi State to prepare for possible flooding and other extreme weather events during the 2026 rainy season.
The warning followed projections contained in the 2026 Seasonal Climate Prediction released by Nigerian Meteorological Agency and the Annual Flood Outlook issued by Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency.
Head of NEMA’s Sokoto Operations Office, Tukur Abubakar, said Kebbi had been classified among the states at high risk of flooding this year, with several communities expected to experience flash floods due to increased rainfall.
According to the agency, the state is likely to witness heavier rainfall than in 2025, particularly between July and September, raising concerns over possible displacement of residents, destruction of farmlands and damage to roads and other infrastructure.
NEMA also warned that strong windstorms could occur at the onset of the rainy season, while elevated water levels along the Kebbi River system may persist into October and November, worsening the impact on vulnerable communities.
The agency identified several local government areas likely to be affected, including Arewa, Dandi, Aleiro, Kalgo, Bunza, Birnin Kebbi, Argungu, Augie, Jega and Maiyama.
Residents living in flood-prone and riverside communities were advised to remain vigilant, clear blocked drainages and waterways, avoid dumping refuse indiscriminately and comply with possible evacuation directives when necessary.
NEMA further warned that the state could experience a 21-day dry spell between June and August, which may negatively affect crop yields.
Farmers were therefore encouraged to adopt climate-smart agricultural practices, including the cultivation of drought-tolerant and early-maturing crops.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to working with the Kebbi State Government, local authorities and emergency responders to minimise disaster risks and protect lives and property during the rainy season.
