NCRI pleads with Kebbi Govt to resolve encroachment, land grabbing
The National Cereals Research Institute (NCRI), Kebbi Rice Research Station, has appealed to the state government to resolve the problems of encroachment and land grabbing of the station’s land in Birnin Kebbi.
The Executive Director of the NCRI in the state, Dr Aliyu Umar, made the appeal at the rice farmers’ field day in Birnin Kebbi on Tuesday.
He decried that the resources available to maintain the 10 out stations of the institution across the country were limited.
Umar urged the state government to come to the aid of the station to enable them serve the state better.
“We appeal to the government for the provision of a unit of tractor to the station and approval of the recommendation of the state Ministry of Agriculture of annual research grant to the station,’’ he said.
Umar explained that the station introduced several improved varieties of rice and soybeans to the state.
“We train extension agents, lead farmers and women processor in good agronomic practices (GAP) and processing technologies respectively.
“We contribute in the provision of quality seeds of improved varieties to farmers in the state and its environs just to mention a few,’’ he said.
