By Ojugbele Omotunde

The Nigerian Bottlling Company (NBC), has inaugurated a recycling bank in Lagos.

Mrs Oluwasoromidayo George, Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Director disclosed this on Tuesday, in Lagos.

According to her, this is to show the NBC’s commitment to collecting and recycling a bottle or can for each one introduced into the market for reuse by 2030.

She stated that the neighbourhood-based recycling bank in Ifako-Ijaiye housing estate in Agege, Lagos, is one of 10 strategically located facilities across Lagos and Abuja which will collect PET bottles and provide residents with a cash-generating opportunity for their plastic waste.

She added that Coca-Cola has made investments in aggregation hubs, recycling banks, and packaging innovation projects, lowering CO2 emissions by over 7,500 MT, as part of their commitment to addressing the issues surrounding single-use plastics. Coca-Cola is a strategic bottling partner.

In keeping with their global pledge to collect one bottle for every bottle on the market by 2030, she continued, Coca-Cola is also investing through the Food and Beverage Industry Association Producers Responsibility Organization (FBRA) to improve post-consumer packaging collection.

She continues, saying that NBC is thrilled about the relationship with Chanja Datti Recycling Co Ltd., which strives to create a sustainable waste management infrastructure, and that the partnership is intended to improve the collection of plastic bottles and packaging debris in Lagos and Abuja.

Chanja Datti Recycling Ltd.’s CEO, Olufunto Boroffice, also announced that the partnership with NBC aims to reduce plastic and PET waste disposal, aiming for a cleaner community and that the recycling bank’s inauguration focuses on environmental cleanup, community income generation through a trash-for-cash model, and addressing socio-economic needs.

Adeoye Babajide, Director of Waste Management, praised the NBC and its partners for their sustainable approach to managing plastic waste and safeguarding the environment.

He emphasized the importance of projects like this for a greener, healthier Lagos State and hoped residents of Ifako-Ijaiye would adopt responsible waste management practices while taking advantage of the plastics for cash initiative.

George thanked the Lagos Building Investment Company and the Lagos State Ministry of Environment for their assistance.
