Natural activities for a healthy liver

The liver is the largest solid organ in the body which filters all of the blood in the body and breaks down poisonous substances, such as alcohol and drugs. It is very vital to keep the liver healthy. There are natural activities that improve the health of the liver.

Regular exercise is key to a healthy liver. It reduces stress on the liver, improves liver function, increases energy levels and also helps to prevent obesity which is a risk factor for liver disease.

Staying hydrated at all times. Taking plenty of water and other healthy beverages to keep the body hydrated help the liver flush out harmful materials. Excessive alcohol consumption can damage the liver and increase the risk of liver disease, so it’s important to limit alcohol intake or avoid it totally.

Weight management plan: Maintaining a healthy weight through healthy diet and exercise can reduce the risk of fatty liver disease, which can lead to liver damage.

Processed or high-fat foods can contribute to liver damage and should be avoided or limited in the diet. Saturated fats, transfats and hydrogenated fats should be reduced in the diet. Consuming foods high in fibre such as fruits and vegetables and whole grains is very essential for the liver health.

Consuming a balanced diet can help support liver health. These include a variety of whole foods, fruits, vegetables, and healthy fats. When the levels of fat in the blood is high (hyperlipidaemia) and cholesterol are high (hypercholesterolaemia), they tend to result to fatty liver disease.

Smoking can increase the risk of liver disease such as cancer of the liver, so it’s important to avoid smoking or quit if you’re already a smoker. Smoking also enhances the toxic effects that some medications like paracetamol have on the liver.

These activities when incorporated into your daily routine can help maintain a healthy liver and reduce the risk of liver diseases.
