Nasarawa’s Marhai Forest Now National Park

The Nasarawa State Government, Wednesday, December 11 officially handed over the Marhai Forest Reserve to the Federal Government, establishing it as a National Park.
The ceremony, held in Lafia, was attended by key dignitaries, including the Minister of Environment, Alhaji Balarabe Abbas Lawal, and the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, Engr. Abdullahi A. Sule, among other stakeholders.
Governor Abdullahi Sule described the handover as a milestone in environmental conservation and sustainable development efforts.
“This event underscores our commitment to preserving Nasarawa’s natural heritage and promoting sustainable environmental stewardship for future generations,” the governor remarked.
Highlighting the significance of the Marhai National Park, located in Wamba Local Government Area, Gov Sule noted its rich biodiversity, unique ecosystems, and potential for eco-tourism.
The governor also outlined his administration’s broader commitment to environmental sustainability, including afforestation, investment in renewable energy, and wildlife conservation.
He urged the Federal Government and development partners to leverage Nasarawa’s abundant natural resources to drive eco-tourism and economic growth.
The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Abbas Lawal, expressed gratitude to the Nasarawa State government for its visionary decision.
He said that the park, home to wildlife species and the iconic Farin Ruwa Waterfalls, will not only enhance biodiversity conservation but also boost eco-tourism and generate economic opportunities for local communities.
“This handover represents a practical demonstration of cooperative federalism, showcasing how state and federal governments can collaborate for sustainable development,” the minister said.
Efforts to upgrade the Marhai Forest Reserve to a National Park began in 2021, following approval from the National Park Service.
Consequently, the Nasarawa State governor established a Technical Transition Committee to facilitate a seamless handover, ensuring that the park’s ecological integrity is maintained.
The Federal Ministry of Environment assured stakeholders of its readiness to manage the park effectively.
Lawal said measures to enhance security, including collaboration with the National Security Adviser, Nigerian Armed Forces, and other agencies, have been put in place to protect the park,
The minister also announced the deployment of trained rangers, equipment, and modern technology for effective management.
