NAGGW to mark 10th anniversary with national summit in Jigawa

The National Agency for the Great Green Wall (NAGGW) has announced plans to mark its 10th anniversary with a high-profile celebration on July 29, 2025, in Dutse, the capital of Jigawa State.
Director-General of the agency, Mr. Sale Abubakar, disclosed this during a courtesy visit to Governor Umar Namadi on Friday, July 11.
He said the event will commemorate a decade of efforts in combating desertification, restoring degraded land, and improving livelihoods across 11 frontline states in Northern Nigeria.
Abubakar said Jigawa was chosen as the host state due to its strategic significance and the high volume of Great Green Wall (GGW) activities implemented there, including international projects such as Action Against Desertification (AAD) and FAO-backed initiatives.
The anniversary will feature a National Green Wall Summit, a fundraising event to support ongoing efforts, public tree planting campaigns, environmental awareness programs, cultural exhibitions, and awards to honor partners and contributors.
The celebration aims to raise national awareness and renew commitment to the African Union-led Great Green Wall Initiative.
Previous editions, including the 2024 GGW Day in Abuja, were attended by high-ranking officials such as Vice-President Kashim Shettima.
In his response, Governor Namadi welcomed the decision to host the event in Jigawa and pledged full support for its success, commending NAGGW’s role in reversing land degradation and protecting the environment in the state.
