NAFDAC shuts 39 water factories in Ogun over poor hygiene, regulatory infractions

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has sealed off 39 illegal packaged water production facilities in Ogun State between February and June 2025, following a series of inspections and enforcement actions.

This was disclosed by the Ogun II State Coordinator of NAFDAC, Mr. Mawo Benu, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Ota, Ogun State.

According to Mr. Benu, the crackdown was the result of inspections carried out at 43 packaged water production sites within the state during the period.

He revealed that 39 of those inspected facilities were found to be operating below acceptable standards, failing to comply with Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP).

As a result, the affected sites were sealed and sanctioned in accordance with regulatory guidelines.

Mr. Benu emphasized that NAFDAC’s enforcement drive demonstrates the agency’s firm commitment to protecting public health by targeting unregistered and unwholesome production activities.

He reiterated that the agency is leaving no room for non-compliance and has intensified efforts to eliminate substandard and unapproved production facilities across the country.

In addition to the closure of illegal operations, Mr. Benu disclosed that some facilities, although previously registered with NAFDAC, were also found to be in violation of hygiene and safety regulations.

These facilities had deviated from the standards under which they were initially registered, thereby compromising the safety of their products.

Such violations, according to him, included the use of expired licenses, production of unapproved pack sizes, unauthorized relocation of production activities to unapproved sites, and the use of fake NAFDAC registration numbers to market unregistered products.

He noted that the enforcement operation serves as a stern warning to all producers and operators in the regulated sector.

NAFDAC, he said, remains committed to eliminating the circulation of unsafe and unregistered products in the Nigerian market and will not tolerate any attempts to bypass established regulatory procedures.

Mr. Benu called on members of the public and stakeholders in the water production industry to support the agency’s mission by reporting illegal production sites or any suspicious activities.

He stressed that public cooperation is vital in ensuring the availability of safe and wholesome products for consumers.

He concluded by assuring that NAFDAC will continue routine and unannounced inspections, and any producer found violating regulations will be swiftly dealt with.

The agency’s goal, he said, is to safeguard the health of Nigerians and ensure that only safe, properly registered, and hygienically produced water and other consumables are available in the market.
