Muftwang Signs N30b Contract to Address water Crisis in Plateau

By Abbas Nazil
Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has taken a major step in addressing the ongoing water scarcity in Plateau South by signing a N30 billion contract for the rehabilitation and construction of conservation structures at the Langtang Dam, Langtang North Local Government Area.
The project is part of the Plateau State Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscape (ACReSAL) initiative, which is funded by the World Bank in collaboration with the Plateau State government.
Speaking while signing the contract, Governor Mutfwang described the project as a crucial move to mitigate the severe water crisis affecting the southern senatorial district of the state.
He assured that within the next 30 months, the initiative would significantly improve water availability in the region.
The governor acknowledged the broader water challenges across the state, particularly in the Jos-Bukuru metropolis, where the Yakubu Gowon Dam has suffered from years of neglect, resulting in an unreliable water supply.
Since assuming office, he explained, his administration has been working tirelessly to tackle the issues plaguing the state’s water sector.
However, he noted that while progress has been made, new challenges continue to emerge, requiring a holistic approach to sustainable solutions.
Governor Mutfwang expressed optimism that within the next six months, his administration would resolve major issues surrounding the Yakubu Gowon Dam and other key dams serving the state capital and surrounding areas.
He reiterated his government’s commitment to providing long-term solutions to Plateau’s water crisis, stressing that the acute shortages in the Plateau South zone remain a top priority.
The governor described the contract signing as a significant milestone in his administration’s efforts to revamp the water sector.
He acknowledged that when his government took office, the sector was in a dire state, but he reassured residents that with ongoing interventions, a more reliable and sustainable water supply would soon be realized.
The ACReSAL project aims to improve climate resilience in semi-arid regions, with a focus on water conservation, land restoration, and agricultural productivity.
The Langtang Dam rehabilitation is expected to enhance water supply for domestic and agricultural use, benefiting thousands of residents across the affected areas.
Governor Mutfwang called for patience and support from the people, assuring them that his administration remains committed to delivering on its promises and improving the quality of life for all Plateau State residents.
