Morocco Proposes Family Law Changes to Improve Women’s Rights
The Moroccan justice and Islamic affairs ministers have proposed major changes to Morocco’s family law.
Women’s rights activists have long advocated revising Moroccan laws protecting women and children within the family. Their demands include full equality in inheritance and child custody as well as the prohibition of child marriage.
This initiative aims to introduce over 100 amendments to the current law, and would also grant women greater rights in disputes over child custody and guardianship, as well as the right to veto polygamous marriages.
This is the first review of Morocco’s family code in 20 years.
