Morocco, Finland deepen water sector partnership

Morocco and Finland have signed an agreement to establish a joint cooperation group on water management, a move aimed at strengthening bilateral relations and expanding technical and commercial collaboration in the water sector.
The agreement was signed by Morocco’s Minister of Equipment and Water, Nizar Baraka, and Finland’s Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, Sari Essayah, during Baraka’s official visit to Finland on Monday.
According to the Finnish government, the new working group will focus on three priority areas: groundwater management, dam operations, and wastewater recycling. The initiative is expected to enhance knowledge sharing, promote innovation and create new opportunities for trade and investment between both countries.
Essayah highlighted Finland’s advanced expertise in water technologies, including groundwater treatment, water purification, wastewater reuse, smart water systems and sustainable water management practices.
She noted that growing global demand for effective water solutions presents opportunities for Finnish expertise to support countries facing water-related challenges, including Morocco.
The agreement follows discussions held between the two ministers in Morocco in March and forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation on sustainable water resource management.
The partnership comes at a time when many countries are grappling with the effects of climate change, water scarcity and increasing pressure on water resources.
Although recent rainfall has improved water availability in Morocco, the country recently emerged from several years of prolonged drought that strained supplies across multiple regions.
To address these challenges, Morocco has been investing in long-term water security measures, including desalination projects, expanded dam infrastructure and policies designed to improve resilience and reduce dependence on rainfall.
The Finnish government stressed the importance of international collaboration in tackling global water challenges, noting that more than two billion people worldwide face threats to their water security.
During his visit, Baraka is also expected to meet with Finnish water technology companies to explore potential partnerships and gain insights into innovative solutions for sustainable water management.
Both ministers are scheduled to participate in discussions showcasing Finland’s expertise and technological advancements in the sector.
