LAWMA Shuts Alaba International Trade Fair Market for Environmental Offences

The Lagos State government has cited violation environmental offences as the reason behind the shutting down of the portion of the popular Alaba International Market and Trade Fair Market.
It was gathered that traders had showed up for the day’s business Monday morning but were prevented from accessing their shops by operatives of the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).
A post made by LAWMA on its official X page (formerly Twitter) handle indicated that the market was shut for environmental offences.
It said the market was found to be in contravention of several waste management guidelines, such as indiscriminate waste disposal, absence of designated waste points, and lack of waste receptacles for proper containment, despite repeated notices.
“We have sealed Alaba International Market over environmental offenses. We teamed up with the Lagos State Task Force and @LAGESCOfficial. The enforcement was carried out on Monday, as directed by the Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab.
“The market was found to be in contravention of several waste management guidelines, such as indiscriminate waste disposal, absence of designated waste points, and lack of waste receptacles for proper containment. The drainage systems were also in an unsatisfactory state. Despite repeated notices, the market authorities failed to take corrective action, prompting the sealing today”, the post read.
