The Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has expanded its waste evacuation operations across major communities in Lagos to remove refuse from environmental blackspots and reduce flooding risks during the rainy season.
On Friday, LAWMA Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Dr Muyiwa Gbadegesin, announced the expanded exercise in a statement, saying the agency had intensified waste clearance in response to increased waste generation and rainfall across the state.
Gbadegesin explained that the operation covers densely populated communities and illegal refuse dumps where accumulated waste obstructs drainage channels and degrades the environment.
He said, “Our commitment is to ensure that every community enjoys a cleaner, healthier environment through prompt evacuation of waste and sustained environmental sanitation efforts.”
According to the LAWMA chief, the agency has deployed additional operational personnel and equipment to improve waste collection, clear blackspots and sustain cleaner neighbourhoods across the state.
He urged residents to support the exercise by properly bagging household waste, patronising only accredited PSP operators and refraining from dumping refuse on roads, medians and drainage channels.
NatureNews notes that indiscriminate waste disposal and blocked drainage systems increase the risk of flooding, water pollution and disease outbreaks, particularly during the peak of the rainy season.
Gbadegesin warned that individuals and businesses that dispose of waste indiscriminately would face sanctions under Lagos State environmental laws, stressing that environmental protection requires collective responsibility.
