Lagos residents raise alarm over worsening air pollution

By Abdullahi Lukman

Lagos residents have raised concerns over worsening air quality across the state, attributing it to indiscriminate waste burning, vehicular emissions, industrial discharges, and poor sanitation practices.

From Ikorodu to Oshodi, Sasha to Alagbado, fumes from refuse fires, exhaust pipes, and factories hang over communities, posing serious health risks, including respiratory issues, coughs, and chest irritation.

Residents called on the Lagos State Government to enforce stricter waste management, regulate vehicle emissions, and provide reliable electricity to reduce generator use.

In Ikorodu, Mrs. Itunu Dada urged authorities to monitor illegal dumping and shut down markets with poor sanitation. In Oshodi, Miss Chioma Ndukwe said emissions from traffic, industries, and waste burning make daily life “choking.”

Experts and environmental advocates warn that prolonged exposure to polluted air can increase the risk of heart disease, lung infections, and cancer.

Mr. Friday Oku, President of the Association of Waste Pickers of Lagos, blamed Nigeria’s reliance on fossil fuels for worsening air quality and called for a shift toward renewable energy and cleaner alternatives such as Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). He also criticised inconsistent government policies that undermine emission reduction efforts.

The Lagos State Government, through its Ministry of Environment and Water Resources, has reaffirmed its commitment to tackling air pollution through initiatives such as the Blue and Green Economy Initiative and the Air Quality Monitoring Network, deploying mobile sensors to track and enforce pollution standards.

Residents, however, warn that without stronger law enforcement and a reduction in waste burning, Lagos’ efforts to achieve clean air may remain ineffective.
