The Lagos Waste Management Authority has announced health insurance coverage for about 16,000 sanitation officers as part of the Lagos State Government’s efforts to expand affordable healthcare for frontline environmental workers.
The Managing Director of LAWMA, Muyiwa Gbadegesin, disclosed this during the celebration of International Women’s Day on Sunday in Lagos.
Gbadegesin said the sanitation officers would be enrolled in the Elera Eko Health Insurance Scheme, the state’s health insurance programme managed by the Lagos State Health Management Agency.
According to him, the initiative aligns with the government’s “Health for All” policy aimed at ensuring residents have access to affordable healthcare.
He explained that once enrolled, the workers would be able to access medical services at designated primary and secondary health facilities across the state.
Gbadegesin added that the programme had received approval from the Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and that health insurance cards would soon be distributed to the beneficiaries.
He noted that the initiative underscores the government’s commitment to improving the welfare of sanitation workers who play a vital role in maintaining a clean environment in the state.
The LAWMA boss also said the International Women’s Day event featured medical screenings and distribution of food items to sanitation officers as part of activities to support their health and wellbeing.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the sanitation officers expressed appreciation to LAWMA management for the initiative.
