Lagos celebrates agrinnovation strides, urges more youths participation in initiative

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Lagos State Ministry of Agriculture and Food Systems has showcased major achievements in its agribusiness sector while encouraging more youth participation through its Agrinnovation Club.

Speaking at the sixth edition of the Agrinnovation Hangout held Friday in Lagos, the Commissioner for Agriculture and Food Systems, Abisola Olusanya, said the initiative had boosted food security and sustainability across the state.

She emphasized the government’s ongoing commitment to making agriculture attractive to young professionals.

The Agrinnovation Hangout is part of the Lagos Agrinnovation Club, launched in November 2023 to connect agribusiness professionals, policymakers, and young innovators.

Olusanya noted that membership has expanded to include non-traditional players such as economists, bankers, and architects, who are now actively involved in agro-export and food logistics.

She urged more young agripreneurs to join the platform, highlighting that agriculture is both profitable and central to the state’s future.

“We are redefining agriculture to be clean, profitable, and fun. This is the way forward,” she said.

Olusanya also cited Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s support for the sector, including the Lagos Agrithon initiative, which disbursed over N100 million in grants to 26 agri-businesses in 2024.

She added that ongoing partnership discussions with global organisations aim to further support youth-led agribusinesses.

Danish Consul General, Ms Jette Bjerrum, pledged continued support for agriculture in Nigeria, pointing to vocational training and curriculum partnerships as key drivers.

“We want agriculture to be respected and structured, like in Denmark,” she said.

Dr Oluwarotimi Fashola, Special Adviser to the Governor on Agriculture, and Mr Emmanuel Audu, the ministry’s Permanent Secretary, both stressed the Club’s impact, urging participants to harness opportunities and build success stories within the sector.
