Kogi Acquires 15 Mining Licenses, Unveils Mining Equipment

By Abdullahi Lukman

Kogi State has acquired 15 mining licenses for modern mining operations.

The state Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo, made this announcement at the unveiling of modern mining equipment last Friday in Lokoja.

Governor Ododo stated that the development positions Kogi among the states actively leveraging Nigeria’s solid mineral resources for economic growth.

He described the move as strategic, aimed at reducing reliance on federal allocations and driving internally generated revenue through resource-based industrialization.

“With these 15 licenses, Kogi can now begin large-scale exploration and mining operations, unlocking the commercial potential of our vast mineral deposits,” the governor said, adding, “This marks the beginning of sustainable economic transformation for the state.”

Ofodo disclosed that Kogi is endowed with more than 30 solid minerals in commercial quantities, including gold, lithium, limestone, and coal.

He emphasized that the newly unveiled equipment will enable efficient extraction and help create job opportunities for residents.

Governor Ododo reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming Kogi into a key player in Nigeria’s mining industry, saying, “We are shaping our own future and taking charge of our economic destiny.”

Speaking at the event, Commissioner for Solid Mineral and Natural Resources, Engr. Bashiru Gegu, underscored the importance of robust policies and proper infrastructure to maximize the state’s mining potential.

He said the 15 mining licenses were secured through the Kogi State Solid Mineral Processing Company Limited.

The initiative is part of the state’s broader agenda to diversify its economy and harness untapped natural resources for long-term development.
