Kenyan Government applauds religious sect for promoting tree-planting initiative

By Daniel Itai

The government has applauded the religious sect for heeding the call to plant 15 billion trees nationwide.

The government particularly commended the Anglican Church of Kenya (ACK) for encouraging its parishioners to plant trees on special occasions, including baptism, birthdays, and weddings.

“I am very happy that the Anglican Church has taken it further, not just planting trees for birthdays, but also for confirmation, baptism, and weddings. I am happy!”

However, despite the goal of planting 15 billion trees, it is important to note that 80 percent of Kenyans still rely on biomass for domestic fuel.

Without making efforts to provide clean cooking options to every household in Kenya, achieving this goal will be challenging.

“Planting trees can no longer be considered a pastime; it is a life-and-death endeavour due to the potential of tree growth to combat the climate crisis we are facing,” said Soipan Tuya, the Cabinet Secretary for Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry.

Additionally, the Cabinet Secretary urged Kenyans to take tree growing seriously, emphasizing that ecosystem restoration as a climate mitigation effort is a matter of life and death.

The ACK, through the Anglican Green Movement, has planted two million trees across the church’s dioceses and is also establishing communal forests.

Furthermore, the church has taken responsibility for restoring degraded acreage in Ngong Forest with the support of Equity Bank.

“We are currently working on an MoU with Netfund and Kenya Forest Service that will enable the Anglican Church to participate in the restoration of the Mau Forest,” said the Archbishop.
