Katsina Subsidizes Food Items with ‘Runbun Sauki’

By Abdullahi Lukman

Katsina State has launched a food subsidy initiative called ‘Runbun Sauki,’ (literally translated as ‘subsidy silo’) aimed at easing the burden of rising food costs on residents across the state.

The program, designed to provide essential food commodities at reduced prices, is set to offer relief to families struggling with the financial pressures of food inflation.

Inspired by a similar initiative in Jigawa State, ‘Runbun Sauki’ will establish 38 consumer shops across the 34 local government areas of Katsina, with additional outlets in the state capital, Daura, and Funtua.

Key food items such as rice, flour, corn, and spaghetti will be made available at subsidized rates, with an additional 10% discount for state and local government employees, as well as elderly citizens.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda, according to his Chief Press Secretary, Ibrahim Kaula Mohammed, approved the initiative during the 10th Regular State Executive Council Meeting, fulfilling a key campaign promise to alleviate the economic hardship faced by residents.

The program will begin with seven centers—three in Katsina and two each in Daura and Funtua—and will eventually expand to all 361 electoral wards across the state.

Eligible beneficiaries will register online through a dedicated portal, providing their personal details and bank information.

Once registered, they will receive a customized ATM card to make payments at the subsidized outlets, ensuring a smooth and efficient process.

In addition to providing immediate relief, the initiative aims to stimulate local agriculture by engaging farmers to supply the commodities sold in the shops, fostering economic opportunities within the state.

‘Runbun Sauki’ aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s national policy to boost agricultural productivity and provide affordable food for Nigerians.
