KASU Acquires W’Bank Grant for Sustainable Agriculture Education

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Chairman of Green Kaduna State University (KASU), Dr. Aliyu Jafaru, has announced the institution’s acquisition of a World Bank-funded Agro-Climatic Resilience in Semi-Arid Landscapes (ACReSAL) grant, marking a significant step towards enhancing sustainability education within the institution.

The announcement was made on Friday, March 28, 2025, during a courtesy visit by the ACReSAL team to the university’s Vice-Chancellor.

Jafaru detailed that the grant would be utilized to establish two state-of-the-art greenhouses on each of KASU’s campuses.

These facilities are to serve as vital “living laboratories,” providing students with hands-on experience in sustainable agricultural practices and contributing to crucial research on climate adaptation strategies.

“This initiative aligns perfectly with KASU’s overarching vision of integrating sustainability into our academic framework, while simultaneously fostering a culture of environmental consciousness among our students and faculty,” Jafaru explained.

The ACReSAL team, led by Hadiza Halid, reiterated their commitment to supporting KASU in dryland management, institutional capacity-building, and strengthening climate resilience within the region.

The institution’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Abdullahi Musa, expressed his gratitude to both ACReSAL and Green KASU for their collaborative efforts in securing the grant, emphasizing its importance in positioning KASU as a leader in climate-smart education.

This project is anticipated to significantly bolster KASU’s role in environmental research, equip its students with essential skills to address pressing climate challenges, and contribute to broader global initiatives focused on sustainable development.
