Kano water board triples revenue through sector reforms

By Abdullahi Lukman

The Kano State Water Board has increased its monthly revenue from less than N50 million to over N160 million, marking a 300 percent growth, according to the state’s Commissioner for Water Resources, Alhaji Umar Haruna Doguwa.

Doguwa made the announcement during a press briefing on the ministry’s recent activities, crediting the revenue surge to comprehensive reforms implemented across the water sector.

He stated that the increase has enabled the board to meet financial obligations, including the payment of staff salaries, which had previously been a challenge following the rise in minimum wage to N70,000.

“We are now generating approximately N160 million monthly, compared to the less than N50 million when we took office,” Doguwa said.

As part of the reform efforts, the ministry conducted a full census of all industries in the state.

This initiative, he explained, was aimed at improving revenue collection, ensuring equitable billing, and enhancing service delivery.

The commissioner noted that these changes have made the water board more financially sustainable, improved staff morale, and set the stage for future infrastructure development.

While acknowledging that much work remains, Doguwa emphasized that systemic issues accumulated over eight years cannot be resolved in just two.

He reiterated the state government’s commitment to providing clean and safe drinking water to Kano residents, highlighting its importance to public health and overall well-being.
