Kano set to chart a greener future will climate change policy launch
By Abbas Nazil
The Kano State Government, through its Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, is set to launch its Climate Change Policy on Tuesday, 29th July 2025, at 9:00 AM (WAT).
The landmark event is expected to bring together a wide array of participants including members of the public, civil society organizations, development partners, academia, environmental stakeholders, and policy actors.
The event is themed “Catalysing Climate Action for a Resilient and Sustainable Kano,” reflecting the government’s strategic focus on building climate resilience and ensuring long-term sustainability in the face of escalating environmental challenges.
The launch marks a significant milestone in Kano State’s journey toward effective climate governance and environmental protection, as it seeks to proactively address the risks posed by climate change to human health, livelihoods, food systems, and ecosystems.
The climate change policy aims to establish a comprehensive framework for mitigation and adaptation efforts, promote green development, and enhance coordination among key actors in the environmental sector.
With support from the Partnership for Agile Governance & Climate Engagement (PACE) and UK International Development, the policy framework is anticipated to provide actionable strategies and financial mechanisms to help Kano reduce its carbon footprint while fostering inclusive and sustainable development.
Kano State, one of the most populous in Nigeria, faces numerous climate-related issues including rising temperatures, erratic rainfall patterns, flooding, desert encroachment, and food insecurity.
The new policy is expected to integrate climate considerations into the state’s development plans, improve environmental governance, and increase public awareness and participation in climate action.
Stakeholders believe that a strong and inclusive policy environment is vital to drive innovation, mobilize climate finance, and strengthen partnerships at local, national, and international levels.
The Kano State Climate Change Policy launch will be conducted both in person and virtually, to enable broader participation from across different sectors and locations.

This policy launch event not only signifies a renewed political will but also a commitment by the state to contribute meaningfully to Nigeria’s national climate goals and the global climate agenda.
As the state takes this decisive step, the initiative is being seen as a model for other states to emulate, especially in Northern Nigeria where climate vulnerabilities are more pronounced.
The Ministry emphasizes that collective action and collaboration remain essential in achieving climate resilience, and thus calls on all stakeholders to play an active role in this transformative process.
By launching this policy, Kano is not just acknowledging the climate emergency—it is leading the charge toward a more adaptive, sustainable, and prosperous future.
