The Kano State government enacted a new law aimed at safeguarding its forestry assets, wildlife, and rangers within the Falgore Reserve.
The new law underscores Kano State’s commitment to preserving its ecological heritage while addressing the socioeconomic needs of its communities.
The legislation, announced by Conservator Sadiq Kura Muhammad, Managing Director of the Kano State Zoological and Wildlife Management Agency (KAZOWMA).
Speaking during the recent World Rangers Day event at Falgore Base Camp, Sadiq Kura revealed that the law, which will take effect before the end of the year, is designed to curb illegal activities by trespassers in the reserve and marks a significant step in the state’s conservation efforts.
The law introduces stringent penalties, including prison terms of up to ten years, to deter offenders.
Sadiq Kura also pledged to foster entrepreneurship and handicraft industries in the local governments of Doguwa, Tudunwada, and Sumaila.
This initiative aims to provide alternative livelihoods for residents, thereby reducing the pressure on forest resources.
The announcement coincided with World Rangers Day, a day dedicated to honoring the men and women who risk their lives to protect wildlife and forests.
This year, the observance was marked by the somber reminder that approximately 140 rangers from 37 countries have lost their lives while defending the environment, as reported by Hajiya Hafsat Bello Adam, Director of Zoo Services.
