The Jigawa State Government has approved ₦353 million to strengthen emergency response measures ahead of predicted flooding across 11 local government areas in the state.
The Executive Secretary of the Jigawa State Emergency Management Agency, Alhaji Hannafi Yakubu, said the funds will be used to procure 20 motorised boats, relief materials and other emergency equipment to support communities at risk.
The intervention follows forecasts by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency, which warned of heavy rainfall and possible flooding in parts of the state during the rainy season, alongside potential dry spells in some areas.
Yakubu said the government is also renovating internally displaced persons (IDP) camps to ensure adequate shelter for residents who may be affected. He added that 11 trucks loaded with food and non-food items have been positioned for rapid deployment if flooding occurs.
According to him, the identified high-risk local government areas are under continuous monitoring, with preventive actions already being implemented by relevant agencies.
Residents in flood-prone communities were urged to clear drainage channels, avoid construction on waterways and cooperate with emergency officials as part of efforts to reduce the impact of potential flooding.
Officials said the measures are aimed at improving preparedness, minimising loss of lives and property, and strengthening the state’s response to climate-related disasters.
