IITA campus designated Ramsar wetland of international importance

By Abbas Nazil

The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture has been officially designated a Wetland of International Importance under the Ramsar Convention, recognising the ecological value of its campus and its role in supporting biodiversity, water security and climate resilience.

The designation places the institute’s campus among globally recognised wetlands that are considered critical for maintaining ecological balance and promoting sustainable environmental management.

Located in Ibadan, Nigeria, the IITA campus contains a unique wetland ecosystem that supports diverse plant and animal species while contributing to natural water regulation and climate mitigation.

The Ramsar Convention is an international treaty that focuses on the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands, acknowledging their environmental importance and encouraging countries to protect these ecosystems.

With the new designation, the IITA campus now joins a global network of wetlands that have been recognised for their environmental significance and their contribution to global ecological sustainability.

Wetlands are designated as Ramsar sites based on nine internationally recognised criteria that evaluate their ecological importance in areas such as botany, zoology, hydrology and limnology.

To qualify for inclusion in the Ramsar List, a site must meet at least one of the criteria, which may include hosting rare or unique wetland types, supporting vulnerable or endangered species, or providing critical habitats for waterbirds, fish and other wildlife.

The government of Nigeria officially designated the IITA campus under the Ramsar Convention, demonstrating the country’s commitment to protecting wetlands and managing natural ecosystems in line with international environmental standards.

Director General of IITA and Regional Director for Africa of CGIAR, Simeon Ehui, said the recognition highlights the ecological significance of the institute’s campus and reinforces the organisation’s responsibility to protect and manage the site sustainably.

Ehui noted that as a leading agricultural research institution, IITA is committed to demonstrating that scientific innovation and environmental conservation can coexist within the same landscape.

He explained that the Ramsar designation also reflects the institute’s efforts to integrate agricultural research with environmental protection while contributing to food systems transformation across Africa.

For nearly six decades, IITA has conducted agricultural research aimed at improving food security, reducing poverty and strengthening livelihoods across the continent.

The Ramsar recognition further emphasises the institute’s approach of combining agricultural innovation with environmental stewardship by maintaining a protected natural ecosystem within its research environment.

As a designated Ramsar site, IITA plans to strengthen its wetland management practices and expand biodiversity monitoring activities across the campus.

The institute also intends to enhance sustainable land-use planning while collaborating with environmental organisations, research institutions, policymakers and development partners to promote conservation initiatives.

Officials said the designation provides new opportunities for partnerships focused on wetland conservation, biodiversity protection, water resource management and climate adaptation strategies.

Other potential areas of collaboration include climate-smart agriculture and the development of nature-based solutions aimed at addressing climate change.

By aligning agricultural research activities with global environmental standards, IITA said the designation reinforces its role as a leader in sustainable development and ecosystem conservation in Africa.
